The Nazi group was the party that was thought to not go anywhere because it was not noticed by the great mass of population, it was an extremist group and it was radical. However the support of the Nazi’s vote started to increase significantly in 1929 in the local elections where Nazi’s gained their first ever majority in the city of Coburg. The increase in the Nazi support is due to the fact that people wanted to get rid of the Weimar republic because people felt it was weak and it was failing. Also was suffering an economic disaster so the people wanted an anti democratic group, a group that was strong and will do anything necessary the Nazi party where just what the German public where looking for. However there where also the communist who were also rising so there must be something that keeps the Nazi’s more popular which is the skills and influence of Adolf Hitler.

Hitler was a charismatic and strong leader, he was not only a great speaker that impressed people when he spoke but he was also responsible for a lot of the organising of the party such as reorganising the party’s strategy, structure and symbols. He also introduced the brown shirt for the SA storm troopers, adopted the outstretched right arm as a salute and personally designed the Nazi flag with the swastika and traditional red, black and white colours. Hitler gave the people a new hope when other parties lack sense of direction and the hated Weimar government was falling. Hitler importance was evident when he was in jail the Nazi party wasn’t at its best and fell.

However Hitler’s power and great leadership can arguably be exaggerated. Although the party fell during his time in prison, he later admitted that he had appointed Rosenberg as leader to deliberately create this impression. Apart from that Hitler had made big mistakes that put him in jail in the first place such as the time of the Munich Putsch where he used brute force to take over which was poorly planned and unimpressive. More over his relationship with his niece and her suicide in 1931 were an embarrassment to the party while appointed Straser as Nazi leader on northern Germany encouraged his rivalry to Hitler. Even Hitler’s request to be chancellor in 1932 ended in rejection, humiliation and a loss of seats in the subsequent election. He was no doubt a persuasive speaker but there are also accounts of people who found him creepy and frightening.

Hitler said “we must struggle with ideas, but if necessary also with fist”, these words summarise the role of the SA or Storm troopers. The SA were provided with brown shirt, emblazed swastika and after 1924, the party bought a stock of cheap, surplus German army tropical shirts. This was the origin of their name the Brownshirts.

The SA attracted a lot of young men for a variety of reasons, ranging from the hatred of communism, commitment to Hitler and love and excitement and violence to a desire for free soup and a new purpose in life.

The SA played a major role in the success of Hitler and the Nazi’s. Their ‘propaganda by deed’ focused on attention on the communist threat and the Nazi’s to end it. Despite their violence and disorder they caused, their marches created an impression that Nazi would offer firm government to restore law and order. The fear that the SA’s size persuaded some of the elites to favour Hitler because they believed Hitler was in control of the SA and they were right.

One of the main reason for the success of the Nazi party was propaganda his propaganda reached out to all classes and it made Hitler seem like the saviour from all trouble for example in 1932 a Nazi poster said “Women! Millions of men without work. Millions of children without future Save the German family. Vote Adolf Hitler!” this shows how the propaganda makes a person feel that voting for Hitler will save Germany and many people believed it. However some will say propaganda just reinforcing existing feelings than creating them because Nazi had major electoral successes in rural areas where there was no or little propaganda going on.

However an alternate view that propaganda lets Germans see the Nazi economic policies which were popular among the people. They said the economy should serve the need of the state not the individual. This got support of people like the working class, blue collar workers in depressed industries were particularly attracted to their interventionist economic policies. It also attracted any other people that had a failing business or job because of the Weimar.

The Weimar government becoming worst only made it easier for Hitler and the Nazis to take over for example Weimar republic were facing economic problems so Hitler draws up an economic plan for Germany.

The Nazi became the largest party because of the role of Hitler, Nazi message, Nazi organisation, propaganda, SA and the support so really this is an artificial question because there is not one answer why Nazi became the leaders of Germany it wasn’t because of Hitler it was because of a lot of things listed and one thing leading to another. Also because the Weimar government was hated and the people were desperate for a change, Hitler and the Nazi were around for a long time (since 1919) and they haven’t really changed their views so it was due to desperation of people that they turned to the extremist and the Nazi where the best extreme group for a number of reasons looked at.

To conclude I believe there is not a sole reason why Nazi came to power however Hitler played a major role in its success but he had a lot of support from the Nazi’s and fall of the Weimar republic helped.
